Nov. 9--It was a dark and stormy night. Well, dark anyway--at least for drivers on the new section of Route 5.
"Can something be done about the lack of streetlights and guardrails on the new Route 5?" Susan J. Gill asked in an e-mail to Fix It. "It is really dark and scary because of the construction barrels on the high point of Route 5."
While the area is still under construction, we wondered if something could be done in the meantime.
We contacted the New York State Department of Transportation and were told there is a light, so to speak, at the end of the road.
"As we speak, the guardrail is going up, and should be completed next week," Jeffrey Zaprowski, the engineer in charge of the project for the DOT, said Friday. The striping was expected to be done this past Saturday, he said.
As for the lighting, Zaprowski said the DOT is working in conjunction with National Grid to get the lighting back up.
Update: Thanks to the unexpectedly mild weather, road crews were able to move forward with a number of projects recently, according to Erie County Public Works Commissioner Gerard Sentz.
"We're out here on Maple Road in the area of the Audubon Country Club," he said Saturday. "They're out here working."
We will continue to update you on the progress being made there.
