WINNING the lottery or getting a big pay rise is less likely to
make you happy than therapy, it is claimed.
Researchers found that the boost to personal happiness achieved
by an pounds 800 course of psychological therapy was equivalent to a
pay hike of more than pounds 25,000.
The team said government focus on pursuing economic growth to
increase citizens' wellbeing was inefficient.
They pointed out that, despite huge economic gains over the past
50 years, mental health appears to be deteriorating in developed
countries.
Study leader Chris Boyce, of Warwick University, said: "Of
course, if you win pounds 40million on the lottery it is going to
change your life massively but there will be down sides.
"Money isn't that effective at making people happy."
