(Source: Datamonitor)trackingGas Natural has registered the Amaime hydro station in Colombia as a clean development mechanism, or CDM project with the United Nations's CDM executive board. The company has said that the project will help to reduce CO2 by over 27,000 tonnes per year.

The project consists of the construction and operation of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric plant with 18MW installed capacity. The plant, which is expected to come on stream in the first half of 2010, uses water from the Amaime river to generate power.

The plant will be located in the central area of the river basin in the Valle del Cauca region, near the towns of Palmira and el Cerrito. It is expected to generate 85GWh per annum.

Gas Natural believes that the CDM project will help to reduce greenhouse gases by over 192,000 tonnes of CO2 over the seven-year credit period, which is renewable to a maximum of 21 years.
