Nov. 26--I t seems like the holiday season started earlier than ever this year, with stores eager to dip into your wallet to make up for a lousy year.

They're not the only ones looking to make a quick buck. 'Tis the season for ho-ho-hoodlums, too.

They know you're looking for a bargain, and they'll do what they can to sell you on their scams, or latest "deal." They also know your guard might be down as your stress rises, and you might be feeling a tad more generous in this season of giving.

Here are a few suggestions to protect yourself. You'll find more tips on my blog at http://blogs.mcall.com/watchdog/ .

Handle your debit and credit cards discreetly. Shield your personal identification number when you punch it in, and keep your card tucked away until it's time to pay.

Speaking of credit cards, remember some banks are playing Grinch and hammering cardholders in these final months before they face increased regulation in February. Interest rates and minimum payments are rising. Credit limits are dropping. If you run up debt as you shop, it could cost you more when it's time to pay it off.

While shopping online, make sure the site is secure, and legit. Sneaky computer geeks have been known to set up sham Web sites offering great deals on the hottest items. They'll take your money and not deliver your item, or deliver one that's not of good quality.

Take the same care when buying online or over the phone as you would when shopping in a store. Before sealing the deal, make your list and check it twice. Make sure you understand return policies and warranties. I'm not a fan of extended warranties, based on your complaints about how difficult they are to cash in.

Consider dedicating a credit card to use only for online purchases. If it falls into the wrong hands, it won't be as big of a deal to cancel if it's not tied to other purchases.

Gift cards are an easy present for lazy or indecisive shoppers like me. But being lazy can cost you and the recipient.

Avoid buying gift cards from display racks. Buy ones from behind the counter when possible because they're protected from thieves who can copy card numbers, check by phone or online to see if they're activated and then use them online before you can.

Check to see if the gift card expires or has monthly fees. If you get a gift card, use it right away. There's no guarantee the store or restaurant will stay in business.

If a rebate entices you to buy something, redeem it immediately before you forget or lose your paperwork. And follow the instructions precisely.
