MINSK. Nov 26 (Interfax) - Belarus and Iran have the potential to
increase bilateral trade to at least $1 billion a year, Iranian
Central Bank Governor Mahmud Bahmani said at a meeting with
Belarusian Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky.
"Our trade totaled nearly $100 million last year. But this is too
little and does not match our potential. We have to increase our
trade turnover at least to $1 billion," Bahmani said.
"We had a good and productive conversation with our Belarusian
partners yesterday and today," Bahmani said. The parties, in
particular, discussed ways to increase trade between the two
countries.
"We believe that banks are among the fundamental structures to
increase trade between the two countries. We are grateful for
receiving the license to open the second bank [with Iranian capital
in Belarus]. This makes our work easier. Countries cannot work
together if there is no banking infrastructure," Bahmani said.
