Oppenheimer Biotechnology Offers Environmentally-Friendly Solutions

to Oil Spill Recovery

May 6, 2010 (Business Wire) -- As Gulf Coast communities brace for an economic and environmental battle against the giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, state and federal agencies, along with private enterprise, are evaluating myriad solutions to protect and preserve hundreds of miles of coastline and fragile inland waterways.

Oppenheimer Biotechnology Inc. (www.obio.com), an Austin-based pioneer in the development of proprietary and environmentally-friendly blends of natural microbes, is now finding itself with an opportunity to offer its bioremediation and bioaugmentation expertise to aid in the massive clean-up effort.

Known as "The Oppenheimer Formula®," the microbial compound is specifically designed and proven to digest and convert spilled oil into non-toxic and useful by-products which are then safely consumed by the vast species of marine life that live in the delicate ecosystems found along the Gulf Coast.

Jennifer Neve, president of Oppenheimer Biotechnology, notes, "Some of the techniques reportedly being used for remediation of the Horizon Deepwater spill are chemical dispersants which do not actually remove oil from the ocean. These solutions only address the cosmetic symptoms without sustainable regard to the environment."

The Oppenheimer Formula has been effectively deployed in sites around the world over the last 20 years. In 1991, Dr. Carl Oppenheimer conducted the first open sea application using oil-eating microbes to mitigate the environmental risk caused by an oil spill from the burning Norwegian supertanker, Mega Borg.

Based on the successful results of the Mega Borg application and several other uses of microbes on oil spills, The Texas Land Office has endorsed the process as a part of the state's oil spill contingency plan.

The benefits of Oppenheimer's products and techniques are significant. Microbes digest crude oil, converting it to non-hazardous, environmentally beneficial derivatives such as fatty acids, enzymes, carbon and water. The Oppenheimer Formula has also earned a Bioremediation Agent listing on the EPA's National Contingency Plan Product Schedule (http://www.epa.gov/oem/content/ncp/products/oppenhei.htm).

About Oppenheimer Biotechnology

Oppenheimer Biotechnology Inc. is an Austin-based company that produces naturally occurring microorganisms that recycle hydrocarbons. Founded by Dr. Carl H. Oppenheimer in 1990, the company's products are a highly concentrated consortia of bacteria in the Domain Archaea that bioremediate simple and complex hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Pollutants are recycled to natural compounds which aid in soil reclamation, organic fertilization and hydrocarbon remediation in marine environments.

About Dr. Carl H. Oppenheimer

Dr. Carl H. Oppenheimer is known around the world as one of the founding fathers of modern bioremediation technology. He devoted his life to the research and development of ecologically safe and sound methods of cleaning up hydrocarbon pollution around the world. Dr. Oppenheimer developed, over a 40 year period, a demonstrably superior microbial consortium. This proprietary blend is known as The Oppenheimer Formula.
