THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10: JIMMY DURANTE

Profile America -- Thursday, February 10th.  Today marks the birthday of one of the most distinctive show business personalities of the 20th century -- Jimmy Durante.  Known as "the Schnozz" for his large nose, he developed a persona as a gravel voiced, aggressive character who fought with orchestras and mangled the English language with sayings such as "It's a catastrastroke."  Starting in vaudeville as a piano player, he went on to make movies and had his own long-running radio and then television programs, which featured him in musical settings. Durante signed off each show with the mysterious words "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are."  Across the U.S., there are 168,000 musicians, singers and others in the musical entertainment industry.  You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
