Emergency services group Homeserve fell 58p to 1436p after UBS downgraded to neutral from buy.

Avanti Communications, the UK based satellite broadband company, jumped 18p to 262 1/2p following a £31m placing at 225p a share to raise £31.5m. It will help fund the upgrade of the launch service provider for the launch of its HYLAS satellite to Arianespace. HYLAS will be the first superfast broadband satellite to be launched in Europe.

Cinema operator Cineworld advanced 5 1/4p to 147 1/2p after reporting a 12pc rise in revenues in the 27 weeks to start of July. Box office receipts were up almost 18pc and retail sales 10.6pc higher. Hit films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Transformers has seen punters flocking to the cinema.

Acquisition news lifted retail commercial property company Carpathian 2 1/4p to 18 1/4p. It has bought a plot of land adjoining its Promenade Centre in Warsaw, Poland, enabling new development opportunities.

EMed Mining edged up 1/2p to 8 1/2p after moving closer to re-starting production at its Rio Tinto copper mine in Spain.Applications have been made to the Spanish authorities and the company is now focusing on the next stage of the development.

Telecoms services provider Freedom4, the former Pipex Communications, advanced 28pc to 4p on news of a £83m share placing which will help fund the proposed acquisitions of Daisy and Vialtus for £123m.

The appointment of former Nokia director Andy Brannan to a senior position within the chip maker left Wolfson Microelectronics underwhelmed at 98p, down 1/2p.

Hallin Marine collapsed 35p to 115p after a dire trading statement. Broker FinnCap says margins are expected to see continued downward pressure in the short term. It slashed its headline full-year profits forecast to £11.2m from £25m.

HARRY POTTER PUBLISHER BLOOMSBURY firmed 1p to 126p following the £10m purchase of Tottel, which produces books, journals and loose-leaf services for academics and students as well as lawyers, accountants and tax advisers. KBC Peel Hunt applauds the deal and says it will advance the group's strategy of developing what it sees as the more promising academic and professional publishing side.
