GOOCHLAND, Va., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A Virginia state audit has revealed a county treasurer who pleaded guilty to embezzling $180,000 in public funds sent the money to a man in Nigeria.
Brenda Grubbs, former Goochland County treasurer, faces life in prison at her sentencing scheduled for Dec. 13, The Washington Times reported Tuesday.
Prosecutor Jeffrey Haislip said the state audit revealed that virtually all the money Grubbs pleaded guilty to embezzling went to a man named "Bobby Johnson" that Grubbs met on the dating Web site match.com.
Johnson told Grubbs he was from Northern Virginia but was working in Nigeria.
Grubbs used several techniques to embezzle the money, the audit found.
A majority of the funds were withdrawn from the county account at the bank. In other cases, Grubbs tampered with deposits.
Haislip told the newspaper Grubbs' lawyer is expected to argue at sentencing that his client had been battling illness, including depression, which may have contributed to her actions.
