U.S. Bank Offers Memorable, Comical Lessons in Information Security with Videos Featuring Tami the Chronic "Oversharer"

Wednesday, February 08, 2012 10:00 AM

Tami is a cybercriminal's dream come true. She's also the star of four new banking security awareness videos that U.S. Bank is sharing via Facebook and YouTube.

In the videos, Tami's inability to keep a secret leads her to share confidential banking information with anyone listening. Eventually, she learns the basics of online security when she joins an "Oversharers Anonymous" support group.

"These videos are a different way for us to share an important security message with the public," said Greg Wood, chief information security officer at U.S. Bank. "Consumers regularly see traditional, fear-based messages about their personal data. This awareness campaign takes a different approach, with lighthearted, simple and memorable messages inviting our viewers to think about how they share their information online and encouraging them to adopt important basic security practices."

Some important tips for banking security include:
-- Protect your computer with up-to-date security programs;
-- Use a unique password for online banking that you don't use anywhere else;
-- Make sure your password is long and strong, mixed with numbers and characters;
-- Type usbank.com in your browser to access online banking, never click through a link;
-- Shred personal documents; go paperless where possible;
-- Watch for fraud by regularly reviewing account statements and setting up alerts and
-- Request your credit report regularly to detect identity theft.

You can see Tami's adventures on U.S. Bank's YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/usbank) or by clicking the "security" link on U.S. Bank's Facebook page (facebook.com/usbank), which also features a downloadable security tip sheet and offers the chance for Facebook visitors to enter into a drawing to win U.S. Bank Rewards cards by submitting a count of how much information Tami "overshares." The contest ends March 31, 2012.
