ATHENS, Greece, April 20 (UPI) -- Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos said Friday the government had received a $33 billion disbursement from the European Union's international rescue fund.
The funding is intended to stabilizing the country's financial sector after banks suffered from losses in the writedown of Greek debt agreed to by private creditors in March, ekathimerini.com reported Friday.
"The government is trying to do everything possible to make sure that financial resources reach the real economy," Papademos said at a business conference.
To get the country's economy moving forward, banks must first be put on their feet so they can begin lending again, Papademos said.
