The State of Delaware launched a new, modern Public Meetings Calendar
that lists public meetings, meetings, hearings and workshops of state
agencies. The new calendar system - calendar.delaware.gov -
was developed by the Delaware Government Information Center (GIC), in
partnership with Delaware Interactive as part of Delaware’s eGovernment
initiative. The application supports the Delaware State government’s
mandate to drive greater efficiencies and cost savings while retaining
and expanding public services and transparency both online and through
mobile channels.
“It is important for Delawareans to know when and where public meetings
of their government are held,” said Greg Hughes, Director of the
Government Information Center. “State government works with and for the
citizens. A transparent and effective state government relies on input
from the citizens. This system helps enable that partnership.”
The new Public Meeting Calendar replaces a system that has been in place
for eight years. The older system was part of a suite of services
developed and maintained by the Department of Technology and Information
(DTI) using database tools due to be retired from state service in the
near future.
The new Public Meeting Calendar features a stream-lined, high usability
interface which is consistent with the look and feel of the state’s new
delaware.gov web portal. Calendar views, filters, a function to browse
current and upcoming meeting entries, and a search function to retrieve
specific meetings, including past meetings, allow Delawareans to view
meetings by day, week, month or state agency. Each meeting listing
features detailed information about the meeting, a meeting change
history to alert users to any updates, a map to the meeting location,
and the ability to scan a meetings-specific QR code to download meeting
information directly to their personal calendars. The system also
provides users access to agendas and minutes for public meetings.
Agencies, too, benefit from the newly-designed back-office functionality
which allows users to manage the entire meeting notice lifecycle,
including authoring and editing meetings; workflow-supported draft
minute and meeting approvals; a convenient copy function for authors to
rapidly recreate meetings that are very similar in nature (description,
location, etc.), saving the author time and effort to recreate the
meeting from scratch. Commonly used meeting locations can be pre-defined
and are readily available for auto-population through an intelligent
search function.
