Time Warner Cable Sponsors Interns in Partnership with Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

Thursday, June 28, 2012 10:00 AM

In partnership with The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), Time Warner Cable will sponsor four interns in the 2012 Summer Congressional Internship Program. Time Warner Cable’s participation in the program furthers its efforts to engage young people in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

"We believe it is especially important to encourage the leaders of tomorrow,” said Fernando Laguarda, Time Warner Cable’s Vice President of External Affairs and Policy Counselor. “We are excited about the opportunities we can make available through this partnership with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute to encourage Latino leaders from around the country to pursue their interests in STEM and public policy.”

The 2012 Time Warner Cable STEM interns are:

  • Ismael Gomez of Ellerbe, North Carolina., who is studying Mathematics at Appalachian State University and is interning at the U.S. Department of Labor.
  • Vanessa Lopez of McAllen, Texas, who is studying Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and is interning in the office of Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (Texas).
  • Esther Urena of Corona, New York, who is studying Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and is interning in the office of Senator Robert Menendez (New Jersey).
  • Jonathan Villanueva of San Pedro, California, who is studying Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is interning at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The interns will be responsible for conducting research, monitoring day-to-day activities, managing communications and assisting with general office matters. Interns also will participate in weekly CHCI leadership and professional development sessions and meet with corporate representatives, national elected officials and foreign dignitaries. In addition, they will tour the Time Warner Cable offices in Herndon, Virginia, and travel to New York City to visit the Time Warner Cable offices as well as the studios of NY1.

All participants in the CHCI STEM internship program are "STEM" majors in school and have an interest in public policy. Time Warner Cable has been sponsoring four CHCI STEM interns each summer since 2010.
