EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/05/12 -- Northern Alberta is hiring! With Canada's lowest unemployment rate, Alberta is short of workers - in fact, 114,000 until the year 2021.

Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) is leading a recruitment drive in the Seattle area, in collaboration with industry to fill vacancies for heavy-equipment technicians, welders, steamfitters/pipefitters, power engineers and construction staff professionals.

The recruitment drive is running in July through online, mobile and radio advertisements, and a roving community cruiser at local events - all of which will promote www.opportunityawaits.com, where interested individuals can view position details, find out more about Alberta and submit applications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to in-person interviews in mid-August.

"Our economy is expanding and we need more workers," says Mike Wo, EEDC executive director of economic development and growth. "We are looking for hard-working individuals who are considering working in Alberta for a few years while economic conditions rebound in the U.S."

To put Alberta's economic growth into context, around $193 billion of major investments are underway or in the works, equivalent to 211 CenturyLink Fields or 175 Hoover Dams.

"For those in search of opportunities, Alberta offers some of North America's highest wages and standards of living. Newcomers can expect to be welcomed with one of the English-speaking world's best education systems, leading-edge health care and a quality of life coveted by many," says Wo.

Recruitment is one EEDC initiative to develop the workforce. Other efforts underway include increasing productivity and innovation, and increasing investment in workplace literacy.

Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) provides leadership in economic development, markets Edmonton as a must-see destination, manages the Shaw Conference Centre and Edmonton Research Park, and acts as a stakeholder in TEC Edmonton, a joint venture with the University of Alberta.
