Alcoa's Sandow Mine Receives OSM 2012 Excellence in Surface Mining Award

Friday, July 27, 2012 10:00 AM

Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today that its Sandow Mine in Rockdale, Texas received the “Good Neighbor Award” in the 2012 Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Awards from Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM).

Alcoa was recognized for successfully working with the community while conducting exemplary mining and reclamation at its Sandow Mine.

Community efforts focused on initiatives taken as part of Alcoa’s annual Green Works volunteering campaign. Alcoa Sandow Mine staff worked with local Boy Scout troops and their leaders and the Milam County, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden to stock and relocate fish, plant trees and assist with beekeeping activities at the mine.

In a letter congratulating Alcoa on the award, OSM Director Joseph G. Pizarchik said, “The enduring, on-the-ground results are a testament to your achievement. I commend you for the high standards that you set.”

Alcoa’s Green Works campaign, an annual two-month global volunteering initiative, was created to support the Company’s environmental programs and celebrate international environmental holidays like Arbor Day, Earth Day and World Environment Day. In 2012 nearly 20,000 Alcoa employees around the world took part.

“The Green Works events demonstrate Alcoa’s commitment to the sustainability of the natural resources found in the mine, as well as showing excellent environmental stewardship,” said Alcoa Energy Manager Tommy Hodges.

The Award will be formally presented to Alcoa at the MINExpo Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, September 24-26, 2012.
