Russia sends aid to Syria

Saturday, October 06, 2012 11:43 AM

MOSCOW, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Russia Saturday delivered 25 tons of humanitarian aid to Syria, the Russian Emergencies and Civil Defense Ministry said.

Most of the aid package was made up of medicine, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia sent about 80 tons of humanitarian aid to Syria in September. That package included canned food, sugar, baby food, blankets and tents.

The 18-month conflict in Syria -- where rebels have been trying to oust the regime of President Bashar Assad -- has claimed as many as 20,000 lives, opposition groups report.
