MPO Summit Coming to Salt Lake City This Summer

Wednesday, November 28, 2012 7:10 AM

Medical Product Outsourcing (MPO) magazine is bringing its conference series to Salt Lake City, Utah. For eight years, at leading manufacturing hubs throughout the United States and internationally, MPO events have provided the medical device industry with the most comprehensive programs addressing critical medical device outsourcing and manufacturing issues.

On June 4-6, the MPO Summit will be held at the Grand America hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. The event will tap into the state's innovative and growing medical device market. Utah's life-sciences industry boasts more than 26,800 employees, making it a leader among Western states for life-science businesses per capita and second for overall industry growth. Of the more than 600 life-science companies located in Utah, more than 100 are medical device companies, according to the Economic Development Corporation of Utah.

"The life-science industry is a great contributor to Utah’s economic diversity, and its performance over the last five years is one of the reasons Utah has bounced back from the economic downturn at a quicker pace than the rest of the nation," said Jeff Edwards, President and CEO of Economic Development Corporation of Utah, which is a supporting sponsor of the event. "We plan to demonstrate to MPO attendees that, when it comes to medical device manufacturing, Utah is a place to be."

Companies such as C.R. Bard, Becton Dickinson, Edwards Lifesciences, Fresenius, ICU Medical and Merit Medical are just a few of the medical device firms already doing business in Utah. In addition, state universities bring in more than $400 million annually in research grants. Utah's two research universities, the University of Utah and Utah State University consistently spin out about a dozen new medical device companies each year combined.

Building from such impressive statistics, this interactive networking and educational event will gather local and out-of-state industry experts—OEMs, contract manufacturers, suppliers, consultants, members of the investment community and academics from inside and outside of the state—for a unique forum to discuss timely industry topics and provide tools to compete and grow in today’s challenging business climate.

"The state is thrilled the medical device industry in Utah is one of the most highly concentrated of its kind in the United States. Hosting the MPO conference is an exciting opportunity to raise the profile nationally of this fast-growing industry cluster and highlight the innovative research at our universities," said Spencer P. Eccles, Executive Director of the Utah Governor's Office of Economic Development, which also is acting as a supporting sponsor of the MPO Summit.

The conference topics for this year's MPO Summit build on almost a decade of experience with right-sized education and networking events geared toward medical device manufacturing’s busy professionals. As in years past, this MPO meeting will focus on delivering the mission-critical information and knowledge sharing that manufacturers and their suppliers use to succeed. The MPO Summit Salt Lake City will include sessions on supply chain issues, product development, supplier management, industry trends, logistics, quality and risk management, outsourcing strategies, sourcing decisions, product commercialization, and much more.

"Utah has proactively supported the growth of its medical device cluster, and the state’s efforts are evident in the staggering number of new companies and new employment in the industry," said Howard Revitch, Group Publisher of Medical Product Outsourcing and Orthopedic Design & Technology magazines. "MPO is excited to tap into this vibrant and expanding market with our upcoming conference. While doing research for our next conference location, we received a lot of inquiries about holding an event in Utah, in many cases, from companies outside the state. This is an excellent opportunity for industry professionals in Utah to discuss manufacturing-specific trends and opportunities, and network with suppliers and OEMs from all over the United States. It also provides companies not familiar with Utah's medtech prowess to explore the resources there."

To date, a number of key sponsors are participating in the first MPO Summit Salt Lake City. Gold sponsors for this year's event are Covidien, Oratech, Poly One and Polymer Solutions: Independent Testing Lab. Silver sponsors include ATL Technology, Cadence Inc., Modified Polymer Components, NDH Medical, Nutek Corporation, Orchid Orthopedic Solutions, Pro-Dex Inc., SMC Ltd. and Tegra Medical. Bronze sponsors are Bonifacio Consulting Services and Stratos Product Development. Supporting sponsors include the Utah Governor's Office of Economic Development, the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative (also called USTAR), and the Economic Development Corporation of Utah.

To attend, the cost is $349 and $49 for students. For more information about the updated agenda, event venue, or about attending or sponsoring, please visit www.mposummit.com.
