Senator Martha Escutia Seeks Independent Investigation Of Alleged Rampant Sex Abuse Of Latino Students In La Unified School District

Friday, January 25, 2013 1:30 PM

Call Comes in Wake of Alleged Abuse Uncovered at Elementary School in Wilmington

WHAT:

Media is invited to cover the announcement by former state Senator Martha Escutia, an attorney and child sex abuse survivors advocate, who is calling for an immediate investigation into what she believes, is a pattern of alleged sexual abuse perpetrated against students by teachers and other employees at schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Escutia is now calling for the investigation after law enforcement officials announced the arrest of former LAUSD teacher Robert Pimental on suspicion that he allegedly sexually abused at least 20 children at George De La Torre, Jr., Elementary School in the Wilmington district of Los Angeles, as reported in the Los Angeles Times.

WHO:

The Honorable State Senator Martha Escutia (Ret.), Partner, The Senators Law Firm

John Manly, Manly & Stewart, Attorneys at Law

WHEN:

Monday, January 28, 2013

11:00 A.M.

WHERE:

George De La Torre, Jr., Elementary School

500 Island Avenue

Wilmington, California  90744

WHY:

The public needs to know why LAUSD is unable to protect children and why a majority of alleged sex abusers appear to end up teaching at economically disadvantaged schools.  The investigation should focus on whether known abusers were intentionally assigned or moved to the poorest neighborhoods.

In addition to the George De La Torre, Jr., and Miramonte schools, alleged sexual abuse perpetrated by teachers and other employees at LAUSD schools has reportedly occurred at numerous other campuses in poor, predominantly Latino neighborhoods.
