The Secret to the Perfect Baseball is Revealed in New Picture Book Miracle Mud

Thursday, March 28, 2013 12:22 PM

What’s the secret to the perfect baseball? In Miracle Mud: Lena Blackburne and the Secret Mud That Changed Baseball—written by David A. Kelly, illustrated by Oliver Dominguez, and published by Millbrook Press, a division of Lerner Publishing Group—readers learn the fascinating history behind Lena Blackburne’s muddy recipe for success.

Lena Blackburne loved baseball. He watched it, he played it, he coached it. But he didn't love the ways players broke in new balls. Tired of soggy, blackened, stinky baseballs, he discovered a better way. Thanks to a well-timed fishing trip and a still top-secret mud recipe, Lena Blackburne Baseball Rubbing Mud was born. For seventy five years, baseball teams have used Lena's magic mud to prepare baseballs before every game.

From failure to triumph, Miracle Mud reveal’s how Lena’s mud went from a river bank to the major leagues and all the way to the Hall of Fame.

About the Author
David A. Kelly grew up an hour away from Cooperstown, New York, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Although he looked forward to the Hall's yearly induction ceremony, his Little League career made it clear he would never be the one inducted. Instead, he focused more on homework than home runs and grew up to become a writer. He lives in Newton, Massachusetts, about 15 minutes from Boston's Fenway Park, with his family.

About the Illustrator
Oliver Dominguez was born and raised on the south side of Miami, where he spent many hours playing baseball with his friends. Dominguez received his BFA in illustration from Ringling College of Art + Design. He currently lives in Fort Myers with his lovely wife, Melissa, and two dogs.
