Statement by Global Automakers' President and CEO Michael J. Stanton Regarding NHTSA's Finalized Guidelines for Electronic Devices Installed in Vehicles

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 1:32 PM

WASHINGTON, April 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Global Automakers supports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) goal to help reduce the potential for driver distraction.  When designing in-vehicle features and their controls, automakers consider usability, comprehension, and safety, in the context of the driving environment.  Our members have already factored in many of the recommendations in the draft NHTSA guidelines for in-vehicle devices in their internal design processes.

We will carefully review the final NHTSA guidelines issued today, and will continue to work with the agency to incorporate new information as it emerges from ongoing research.

Global Automakers supports bans on the use of hand-held devices for texting and phone calls while driving.  In our view, to be effective, the NHTSA guidelines should be comprehensive and address these portable devices as well.

Go to our website to see comments and testimony that Global Automakers has previously submitted to NHTSA on the guidelines for in-vehicle devices.
