California lawmakers finish up $96.3 billion budget

SACRAMENTO, June 16 (UPI) -- California lawmakers Saturday finalized $96.3 billion budget Gov. Jerry Brown called "sustainable into the future."

The budget includes healthcare expansion and financial aid for middle-class college students. Gov. Jerry Brown touted it on Twitter.

The final pieces of the budgetary puzzle approved by the Legislature included bills providing university tuition assistance, energy efficiency projects and the expansion of healthcare programs, the Los Angeles Times reported..

Lawmakers also renewed a $500 million tax on managed care plans and approved a framework for increasing welfare grants in the coming years, the newspaper said.

"After 2 1/2 years of struggle and difficult times, California's budget is balanced and sustainable into the future," Brown said in a post on Twitter Saturday afternoon.
