Hirschbeck to be umpire crew chief at All-Star Game

NEW YORK, July 11 (UPI) -- John Hirschbeck was selected to be crew chief and home plate umpire for the 84th All-Star Game, MLB officials announced Thursday.

Hirschbeck is a 30-year veteran major-league umpire and has worked two All-Star Games -- 1989 and 2004.

There are two first-time All-Star umpires in this year's crew -- Rob Drake, who will work left field, and Chad Fairchild, who will be stationed down the right-field line.

Wally Bell, in his third All-Star Game, is to call first base while Larry Vanover is to handle second base and Paul Emmel will be at third. It is the second All-Star Game assignment for both Vanover and Emmel.

MLB said the official scorers for the game will be Jordan Sprechman and Howie Karpin, both of whom are from New York, and Susan Slusser, from the San Francisco Chronicle, who is president of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

The All-Star game is scheduled for Tuesday at Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets.
