Intel chief predicts new chips will bring cheaper computers

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 18 (UPI) -- The new head of Intel says the public can look forward to much cheaper portable PCs in the near future, powered by a new generation of Intel chips.

Laptops powered by Intel's low-end Atom line of chips will have a big impact on demand later this year and into 2014, new Chief Executive Officer Brian Krzanich suggested in an earnings call Wednesday.

Intel has historically concentrated on it flagship Core chips, which component makers pay hundreds of dollars for, while its Atom line of chips can be had for tens of dollars.

Krzanich said that would change, and Intel will even be shifting Atoms production -- including a forthcoming model code-named Bay Trail -- to new Intel manufacturing processes once reserved for Core chips.

That could see laptops with touchscreens, usually priced at $500 and more, going for much less, he said.

"PCs, especially with Bay Trail, are going to move down to $200 to $400 range," Krzanich told The Wall Street Journal.

Bay Trail could also be at the heart of a new generation of tablets priced at $199 or even less than $150, he said.
