Joint Forces Once More: TUV Rheinland's New 10,000th GS Certificate Issued to Lenovo

HONG KONG, Aug. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The "TUV Rheinland 10,000th New GS Certificate Presentation Ceremony" was recently held at the headquarters of the Lenovo Group in Beijing. The ceremony marked the official issuance of TUV Rheinland( http://www.tuv.com )'s 10,000th GS certificate bearing new test mark to Lenovo. During this collaboration, Lenovo ThinkServer products passed TUV Rheinland's CB, cTUVus and GS certification processes as well as Energy Star 2.0 testing. The successful test result of Energy star 2.0 makes the group one of the first server vendors in the world to do so. The certification ceremony was attended by Uwe Halstenbach, Electrical Director of TUV Rheinland Greater China, and AB Wang, Executive Director of the Global Server Development Lab at the Lenovo Enterprise Product Group.

TUV Rheinland is a leading international independent testing, inspection and certification services provider, while according to the latest numbers by IDC and Gartner, Lenovo is currently the No.1 PC company in the world. The partnership between these two powerful industry leaders will undoubtedly make a difference in the server and electronics industries.

This was the second time the two companies have joined forces since the green mark certification was established for Lenovo's ThinkVision LT2323z VoIP display, ThinkCentre M92z AIO and ThinkCentre M93p Desktop. The move signals that both parties are planning to continue cooperating on environmental indicators and export certification for ThinkServer products to develop more new green products for the international market. The Energy Star 2.0 testing for Lenovo's ThinkServer products is proof that the two parties will join forces to develop the green electronics market.

Developing International Markets Together

During this collaboration, Lenovo ThinkServer products passed TUV Rheinland's CB, cTUVus and GS certification processes. TUV Rheinland is currently one of the few solution providers that can provide server export certification for both the North American and European markets.

The 2012 report published by the Worldwide System for Conformity Testing and Certification of Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE) indicated that TUV Rheinland was the top certificate-issuing body in the CB system for the eighth straight year. IT products accounted for 80% of the certified products. This highlighted TUV Rheinland's strength in IT product certification and its ability to provide comprehensive certification services for notebooks, displays, keyboards and mouses.

Going through the review and CB certification process once is sufficient to prove the safety of a product in the world's most important markets. Uwe Halstenbach said that "the professional service provided by our global service network and technical team shows how customers are more confident about the quality and safety of products from certified businesses." He explained that "thanks to our swift audits and extensive experience, our one-stop service makes complex and redundant audits unnecessary for certifying businesses. The audit and accreditation required by multiple countries can all be completed in one run, helping certified businesses gain quick and convenient access to key international markets."

The GS market is synonymous with product safety. A product with the GS mark has passed safety testing by an independent certificate-issuing body. It is compliant with applicable European directives, as well as Germany's Equipment and Product Safety Act or other safety and hygiene legislation from other countries. Further, the GS certificate takes consumer habits and importer responsibility into account. Because it also serves as proof of product quality and safety, it has become the preferred option for many exporters looking to enter the German market.

In Germany and other parts of Europe, general consumers have become accustomed to purchasing products with the GS mark. As Germany's Equipment and Product Safety Act is aimed at protecting consumers, in the event of a dispute, products with the GS mark have been determined safe and offered their makers additional protection. The GS mark requires the inspection of vendors' production and quality management processes by the certificate-issuing body. This is why products with the GS mark are usually preferred by consumers over those with only the manufacturer's own CE mark.

"TUV Rheinland's GS mark has gained the high recognition and trust from European buyers for many years. Moreover, they can also provide cTUVus certification for quick access to the North American market, with much shorter lead times and a more simple process for the North American market to ensure more potential business cooperation opportunities," noted by AB Wang.

Being Green Together

TUV Rheinland not only offers green product testing and solutions, but also has made green and sustainable development its development policy. The decision to collaborate with Lenovo Group demonstrates the confidence and determination of both organisations to develop green products together.

In fact, both sides signed a service agreement on the safe disposal of waste electronics in 2011. According to the agreement, Lenovo Group would provide TUV Rheinland China with a safe channel for disposing office electronic waste products such as notebooks, personal computers, printers, displays and servers.

On TUV Rheinland's behalf, Uwe Halstenbach noted that the company "adheres to sustainable development and implementing corporate social responsibility. The ideology coincides with Lenovo in their ARS service". This, he suggested, meant that TUV Rheinland and Lenovo were jointly committed to green IT and playing a key role in leading the industry and the general public towards environment protection. "Our green mark", he said, "is a manifestation of manufacturers' reducing environmental damage and taking social responsibility. In terms of green energy, green product design, corporate carbon footprint and green living, we help manufacturers achieve their brand commitment or their commitment to retailers, win a competitive advantage as green products and enter the international market. Green mark certification by a third party will undoubtedly serve as a proof of conformity to the international benchmark of a product or system."

Launch of a Brand New Testing Mark

For over a century, TUV Rheinland has emphasised a corporate mission of creating a balance between technology, humanity and nature. TUV Rheinland has not only won international trust through its authority as a testing and certification provider for safety and quality, but also helped customers by providing complete and tailor-made technical solutions. At the beginning of 2013, TUV Rheinland released its latest global new test mark, which will replace all of the test marks used by TUV Rheinland over the past 140 years. The inclusion of QR code allows smart phones to scan and connect to the TUV Rheinland database, further enhancing the transparency and integrity of the product testing and system. The new testing mark represents truth, reliability, authority and accuracy. The 10,000th GS certificate came as a pleasant surprise to both parties and pushed collaboration between the parties to new heights.

The new testing mark will greatly benefit manufacturers and end users. Its possible applications include food packaging, home appliances, toys and playground items, kitchens, bathrooms, gardens, hospitals and elevators.
