AU asks ICC to drop cases against Kenyan, Sudanese leaders

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- The African Union has asked the International Criminal Court to delay cases against the presidents of Kenya and Sudan until they leave office.

"Sitting heads of state and government should not be prosecuted while in office," Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. "We have resolved to speak with one voice to make sure that our concerns are heard loud and clear."

Tedros, the current chairman of the AU executive council, accused the ICC of targeting African nations, the BBC reported Saturday.

"The court has transformed itself into a political instrument targeting Africa and Africans. This unfair and unjust treatment is totally unacceptable," he said.

Some African countries have discussed withdrawing from the ICC. Kenya has already passed a motion to withdraw.

Former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has voiced support for the ICC, saying withdrawing would be a "badge of shame."
