ETF Deathwatch For March 2011: 10 Funds Escape

Ten ETPs escaped from ETF Deathwatch this month, and no new names joined the list. As a result, the total quantity of products on Deathwatch dropped to 142, consisting of 105 ETFs and 37 ETNs. The average fund on the list has $8.9 million in assets and has been on the market for 27.5 months.

All new products are given a 6-month grace period (immunity) in which to gain traction with investors before they can be considered for ETF Deathwatch. The 16 products launched in August 2010 are now eligible for inclusion, but none of them showed up on the list. It appears that August 2010 is a good vintage.

I can't recall any previous month without at least one new name joining the list. The new ETF Deathwatch criteria for 2011 should help stabilize the constituents, so maybe this won't be such a rare event going forward.

Whenever an investment segment receives an abnormal amount of media attention, the ETFs in that segment also see a pickup in activity. The energy sector has been consistently in the news the past month, which helped three energy-related ETFs come off the list. There is no discernable theme regarding the seven other escapees. iShares Russell Top 200 Index Fund (IWL) came off as asset swelled 250% from $11.8 million to $41.3 million.

ELEMENTS currently has two products with less than $1 million in assets: ELEMENTS Ben Graham Large Cap Value ETN (BVL) and ELEMENTS Ben Graham Total Market Value ETN (BVT). ELEMENTS Spectrum Large Cap US Sector Momentum ETN (EEH) saw the least amount of trading activity for the month, averaging $1779 per day. ELEMENTS offers 14 ETNs in all, and eight of them are consistently on Deathwatch.
