MARKET DIRECTION

Stock futures continue to indicate a firmer start. Commodities are in focus. Gold is carving out new record highs above $1,460 an ounce, with silver at 31-year highs and oil above $108 a barrel. The euro is hitting a 15-month high against a generally weaker dollar. Leading stock averages ended little changed Tuesday after the blue-chip Dow hit its highest closing level in nearly three years on Monday.

Gold, silver and mining exchange-traded funds, plus individual mining shares, are drawing added interest as gold futures touched a new record high Wednesday and silver hit a fresh 31-year high. Oil is also trading above $108.50 a barrel.

Gold for June delivery is up $8 or 0.6% at $1,461 an ounce on Globex. On Tuesday, the metal hit its previous record top of $1,455.50 in New York. Benchmark silver futures also broke new ground, with the contract for May delivery gaining 20 cents or 0.5% to $39.40.

Silver prices are up more than 27% this year, while gold prices are up 2.3%.
