Calgon Carbon (CCC) Receives Ultraviolet Disinfection Systems Contract In Los Angeles

 December 05, 2012 11:43 AM

(By Balaseshan) Calgon Carbon Corp. (NYSE: CCC) said it has received ultraviolet disinfection systems contract worth $12.4 million for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

The company has been awarded a contract by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to supply Sentinel Ultraviolet Disinfection Systems (UV systems) for the Los Angeles Aqueduct Filtration Plant (LAAFP) and the Los Angeles Reservoir (LAR).

The 14 Sentinel Chevron UV reactors, each 48 inches in diameter, along with associated control equipment will be provided for the LAAFP.

This plant will be capable of disinfecting up to 600 million gallons per day of water at peak flow rate. The 15 Sentinel Chevron 48 UV Systems provided for the LAR will be capable of treating 650 million gallons per day.

The project will provide LADWP customers with an additional barrier of protection from water borne pathogens and enable a reduction in the use of ozone and chlorine to comply with the EPA Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule and Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule.

The systems apply a carefully controlled dosage of UV light to the drinking water without the use of any chemicals. Ultraviolet disinfection of water occurs by virtue of a physical process which alters the DNA of harmful organisms, rendering them unable to reproduce and cause harm.

LADWP, which serves 3.9 million residents, is the largest public water provider in California. It is also the second largest provider in the United States based on population served.

This is Calgon Carbon's second major UV contract in California. San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's Tesla Treatment Facility, which opened in July 2011, uses 12 of the Sentinel Chevron 48 systems to disinfect up to 315 million gallons per day.

Calgon Carbon, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a provider of products, services, and solutions for purifying water and air, food, beverage, and industrial process streams primarily in the United States, Europe, and Japan. It operates in three reportable segments: the Activated Carbon and Service, Equipment and Consumer.

CCC is trading up 0.86% at $14.02 on Wednesday. The stock has been trading between $11.54 and $17.25 for the past 52 weeks.
