(By Balachander) Automaker Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) reported a 6% rise in March U.S. sales, due to higher demand for utilities and trucks.
Total vehicles for the month of March increased to 236,160 units from 223,418 units. Sales from Ford brand grew 6.9%, while Lincoln sales fell 22.5%.
Type-wise, Ford car sales edged 0.2% lower, with utilities and trucks rose 13.6% and 6.0% respectively.
"Ford's newest vehicles – Fusion and Escape – set all-time monthly sales records in March, driving Ford Motor Company's best U.S. sales results since May 2007," the company said.
Fusion sales topped 30,000 for the month, and 80,000 for the three-month period for the first time in Fusion sales history, Ford noted.
Escape sales jumped 28% and Explorer sales surged 33%.
America's best-selling pickup, the Ford F-Series, sold 67,513 pickups in March, a 16% increase over last year.
F is trading 1.63% higher at $13.11 at 10.07 am ET on Tuesday.
