Futures improved throughout pre-market trading and are now indicating a flat to narrowly mixed open. Early trade is an indication Wall Street looks to consolidate some of the gains recorded over a four-day run. Airlines and particularly Ual Corp (NASDAQ:UAUA) are getting are getting some commentary this morning: - Barclays is out saying they think many underestimate the potential for a significant airline revenue recovery, particularly for the legacy carriers. With recovery expectations muted, they think even a relatively modest recovery would pave the way for a profitable 2010 and materially higher share prices. They continue to favor legacy airlines over low-fare carriers, with top picks DAL and UAUA, the former getting no respect lately. AirTran (NYSE:AAI): Upgraded To Buy At Merrill Lynch/BAM With A $9 Tgt

Merrill Lynch/BAM is upgrading AirTran (NYSE:AAI) to Buy from Underperform while raising their price tgt to $9 from $4. According to the firm, the upgrade is due to an improved earnings outlook based on better-than-expected sales trends, especially in the ancillary area, that they believe will build as the year progresses and into 2010. In that regard, the firm is raising their 2009 diluted EPS estimate from $0.40 to $0.80 (vs. consensus of $1.06) and 2010 diluted EPS estimate from $0.50 to $0.95 (vs. consensus of $1.00). Overall, I like AirTran. If I’m going to California, I’ll look at SouthWest first but otherwise, I prefer AirTran. Why? I’d love to talk up the company - a division of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI) - and tell you what plush seats and amazing service they have. If I did though, I’d be lying. In reality, their seats are no more and no less comfortable than any of the other low-cost airlines, and they have the typical friendly service you’d expect. The main reason why I stick with AirTran is that I’m a creature of habit. I’ve flown with them before, I know what to expect and so I’ll fly with them again. The Meek Continue To Dominate Equities

Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. All it takes nowadays is saying "business has stabilized at the worst levels we've seen in decades" to elicit glee and massive short covering rallies. NEW YORK - Airline stocks gained in trading Thursday with the broader market, which was driven by fresh news that the economy is starting to grow.
A report released Thursday revealed the U.S. economy grew at a 3.5 percent pace in the third quarter, the best showing in two years, fueled by government-supported spending on cars and homes.
It's the strongest signal yet that the recession is over and the economy has entered a new, albeit tentative, phase of recovery.
