The board of Anglo American (AAUK) met today to discuss the offer made by Anglo-Swiss mining company Xstrata (XSRAY), and reportedly the board of Anglo American unnanimously decided against the merger. The board’s decision was not all that unexpected as management had characterized the merger talks as preliminary. The deal was billed by Xstrata as a merger of equals based on the similar capitalization sizes of the mining companies, and their complementary products. The proposed company would be half owned by each company and no cash change hands. However, Anglo American doesn’t seem to be too interested in linking up with Xstrata in the $68 billion all stock deal.
Cramer: Guard Against Inflation With Gold

Jim Cramer for the last few months has been advising viewers to hedge themselves against the real possibility of a ramp up in inflation. In the past, I can recall him saying that a properly diversified portfolio should have as much as 20% allocated to gold and other precious metals. While, Cramer has a tendency for hyperbole, as you can see in the quote as he talks about “wheelbarrow currency”, there is still wisdom in hedging your portfolio somewhat against inflation. He had this to say prior to interviewing the CEO of Agnico-Eagle (AEM) <a href="http://blog.ockhamresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/aem.jpg"[More...]

Anglo American Priced Fairly - Analyst Blog

Headquartered in London, Anglo American, Plc (AAUK) is a global leader in mining and natural resource sectors. The company has operations in Africa, Europe, South and North America, and Australia. It operates under the following business segments: coal, gold, platinum, base metals, diamonds, industrial minerals, ferrous metals and industries. We are maintaining a Hold recommendation on Anglo American. The company is benefiting from strong demand for commodities around the globe and an increase in production. However, risks to global economic growth remain, and as inflation moderates, the need to hedge against it using commodity stocks is less attractive. The stock is trading at 4.1x our 2008 EPS estimate but given the economic slowdown worldwide and our forecast of just 2% EPS growth for the[More...]

Good morning. We're set to start the week off on a positive note. Premarket futures indicate we're likely to see a +1% gap at the opening bell. Rallies in overseas markets following news of a large stimulus package in China, more interest rate cuts by banks around the world, and news that the three-month dollar Libor has fallen to its lowest level since 2004 have set a positive tone.
