Down Day To Begin The Week

The indices had a down day to begin the week, but once again a snapback in the last hour and a half brought them substantially off the lows and pared back the losses. The day started out with a gap down. They bounced around for an hour or two and formed what looked like bear flags, and sure enough rolled over and came down sharply. But they stabilized by mid-day, and then bounced around in the afternoon and rallied. At the close, the Dow fell 32.12 to 9337.95, the S&P 500 down 3.38 to 1007.10, 6 points off its low, and the Nasdaq 100 lost 9.06 to close near key resistance at 1610.43, 11 points off its low. The technicals were negative by 8 to 7 on advance-declines on New York and by 14 to 13 on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was nearly dead-even flat on New York on total volume of under 1.1 billion. Rally Refuses To Give Way

We certainly had another up-day, but it all came in the last 20 minutes or so. The market opened lower in the morning, rallied steadily until mid-day to new highs, getting up to 1007 on the S&P 500. The indices then rolled over, but the SPX managed to hold 1000 three times in the afternoon, while the NDX also held support around the 1618 area, near the morning lows. A last 20-minute short-covering frenzy took the market up sharply and they closed in the plus column. Net on the day the Dow closed up 33.63 to 9320.19, the S&P 500 up 3.02 to 1005.65, and the Nasdaq 100 up just 0.37 at 1628.49. However, that was 12 points off its low. Advance-declines were 3 to 2 positive on New York and about 4 to 3 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was better than 2 to 1 positive on New York on total volume of 1 1/4 billion. Rally Rolls On

The indices had another strong start to the week with another strong gap up at the opening on very positive futures. They then backed and filled, retested early lows and then rallied steadily to mid-afternoon when they reached their peaks for the day. They pulled back into the last hour, but in the last 15-mintues snapped back sharply to close near the highs for the day on the Nasdaq 100 and not far from them on the S&P 500. Net on the day the Dow gained 114.95 to 9286.56, just 12 points off its high. The S&P 500 was up 15.15 to 1002.63, closing over 1000 for the first time since November. That was less than a point from its highs. The Nasdaq 100 advanced 24.76 to 1628.12, just pennies from its high. Advance-declines were 5 to 1 positive on New York and 2/1/2 to 1 positive on Nasdaq. We are upgrading Stone Energy Corp.'s (SGY) shares to Buy from Hold following the company's better-than-expected second quarter 2008 results. The stock's recent pullback (down more than 20% in the last month alone), primarily due to commodity-price weakness, has made its valuation very attractive. We like the acquisition of Bois d'Arc Energy (BDE). The strategic rationale of the transaction is compelling, given the complementary asset bases, strategies, and skill sets of the two companies.
