A little known asset class made a few headlines in recent days when two participants – Ares Capital Corp. and Apollo Investment Corp. – filed public offerings to raise capital. These two companies are a subset of a little known asset class which was created to provide small investors access to private equity investments while also providing more capital to help small and middle market companies grow. These companies are known as Business Development Companies (BDC) and, when publicly listed, are roughly[More...]

Quant Funds And Market Rallies: All Rotten?

Anytime I see a well-written article by another college student, I pay extra attention. Such is the case with Naufal Sanaullah’s piece on why he thinks this recent rally is unsustainable. It’s quite a comprehensive bearish argument, with good points about the technical aspects of trading and a number of shots at the accuracy of last quarter’s bank earnings – and it will also serve as a good starting point for me to assess my own view of where the market is going. Still, I couldn’t help but be struck by the conspiracy-heavy undertones (most of which were backed by links to Zero Hedge – which provides a lot of thought-provoking pieces, none of them ever being positive). I’m not going to argue on points about CDS trades with AIG, because there are[More...]

Don’t Chase High Yielding Stocks Blindly

Most investors who are close to or in retirement look for dividend stocks as a source of their retirement income. I believe that this is a great investment strategy, as long as these investors don’t chase high-yielding stocks. With the average market yields at 3%, stocks that yield more than 10% should not be automatically embraced in ones income portfolio, but examined more closely than usual. There are several reasons why a stock is yielding over 10%, one of them could be that the stock price has been in a severe down trend, which has increased the current yield on the stock. <span[More...]

ACAS Dividend News

American Capital Strategies announced that it will be acquiring all of the ordinary shares of European Capital held by other investors. European Capital shareholders will be getting about 1/3 of ACAS share in exchange for their stock. Furthermore ACAS announced that it won't pay any more dividends for the remainder of 2008. This doesn't really come as a shock to me as ACAS stock price has been falling for several months after I considered it a must own dividend stock and bought some shares in this business development company. With the stock being off over 40% as of now I guess I should have sold at the open if I had seen the news earlier. Anyways I am planning on selling my ACAS position.
