Apr. 7--The number of mass layoffs in Illinois is going up.
Through the first three months of 2009, 67 Illinois companies have notified the state that they plan to close operations or cut a significant number of employees at a particular location.
That's up nearly 50 percent from the 45 in the first quarter a year ago, according to records filed with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Alcoa Snares Needed Billion for Rio Tinto

Feb. 13--Alcoa Inc. is selling its interest in mining giant Rio Tinto Group for about $1 billion to investment partner Aluminum Corp. of China, one year after investing $1.2 billion in the world's third-largest mining company.
The deal helps solidify Alcoa's finances, just days after Standard & Poor's Ratings Services dropped its ratings with a prediction Alcoa's credit outlook is deteriorating.

Alcoa Posts $1.19 Billion Loss at Year's End

Jan. 13--Alcoa Inc. said Monday that it lost $1.19 billion in the final three months of 2008 -- its first quarterly loss in six years -- because of a sharp drop in demand from the automotive and construction industries and a 35 percent drop in aluminum prices.
"The aluminum industry is caught in a perfect storm of historic proportions" of decreased demand and pricing that plunged 56 percent during the last half of the year, CEO Klaus Kleinfeld said.
Alcoa, with headquarters in New York and an operations center in Pittsburgh, was the first major aluminum company to begin to curtail production when it started cutting in September, he said.

Joint Venture With ADM Announced By ACH Food

Oct. 29--CHAMPAIGN -- The ACH Food Companies plant in Champaign will be affected by the Memphis, Tenn.-based company's decision to form a joint venture with Decatur-based Archer Daniels Midland.
As described by the companies, Stratas will combine ACH's sales and marketing expertise with ADM's origination and processing capabilities.
ACH once known as HumKo employs about 300 at its plant at 710 N. Mattis Ave., C. That plant produces vegetable oils, such as those from canola, soybeans and cottonseed, as well as non-dairy creamer.

Sep. 29--BEIJING -- Coca-Cola's friendly $2.5 billion bid to buy China's biggest juicemaker is emerging as a test of whether Beijing will allow foreign companies to buy homegrown businesses--or force entrepreneurs to serve its vision of creating national economic champions.
Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd., little known outside China but with an estimated 42 percent of the country's pure juice market, could become a victim of its own success if Beijing deems it too big and famous to fall into foreign hands.
Huiyuan's green cartons of orange, apple, pear and grape juice are ubiquitous in Chinese groceries.
