Sector In Spotlight: Coal Industry Outlook

Our near-term (6-18 months) outlook for the coal industry has improved somewhat from our previous neutral sentiment to a more positive undertone. Based off of various recent economic indicators, the U.S. economy appears to be stabilizing. Although the rest of 2009 is likely to continue on a path of weak steel and electricity demand relative to 2008 levels, several factors should help lift the coal producers in 2010. Reductions in capex spending from both coal and natural gas producers, the weakening of the U.S. dollar and most importantly, increased steel and electricity consumption in '10 should all be positive catalysts for the coal industry next year. As stated in earlier outlook summaries, benchmark metallurgical prices for fiscal 2009 have been set around $120/mt -- off markedly from the $300/mt level seen in 2008 but still above historical met price levels. Let me preface this piece by saying I stole this specific instrument from Jeffrey Saut, who mentioned it in his weekly missive. Long time readers will know I've mentioned this market has become all about asset allocation, and sectors - I noticed this late in 2007 when we were hiding out in commodities while many other sectors were imploding but other than a few periods when "everything" is going down (or up) it appears a lot of individual stock selection is going out the window and "sectors" are more important. Some themes are broad like "China" or "commodities" (which in many ways are now the same theme), where others are narrower such as "casual dining restaurants". Coal was one of our best performing sector groups in latter 2007 through summer 2008. While much of the focus of late has been on natural gas, the coal stocks have been ripping in even larger magnitude. I was a bull on coal over natural gas (although the market in its student body left trading simply moves all commodities together) because of the portability of coal over natural gas. The major index charts remain in solid rising trends for now. On a fundamental level, I continue to think this rally has been built on TARP money, short covering, and unrealistic hopes on the economy. Although corporate earnings have exceeded estimates, in the end earnings remain poor. Overbought sectors such as retail, restaurants, real estate, and financials need to contend with a still-deteriorating economic picture. That being the case, I am choosing to remain patient with a majority of short positions while actively trading the long side as long as the rally continues. [More...]

Nov. 3--To meet immediate energy goals, the nation must improve energy efficiency by 15 percent and test large-scale efforts to capture and store carbon dioxide, according to a new National Research Council report.
That report, "America's Energy Future: Challenges and Opportunities," was the topic of a daylong symposium Monday hosted by the International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability at Washington University.
Washington University Chancellor Mark Wrighton served as vice chair of the committee that wrote the report, which he said is circulating among key national policymakers.
