Biostar Raises $3.6 Million

Biostar Pharmaceuticals has completed a private placement that raised $3.6 million in new capital. Biostar will use the proceeds to complete its new raw materials processing facility. By taking its raw material production in house, Biostar will lower costs and ensure its product quality. Biostar plans to sell excess raw materials to other pharmaceutical companies in the Shaanxi province.[More...]

Even during the worldwide recession it seems consumers continue to abandon ‘dumb’ phones when, for just a little bit more money, they can get a pocket-sized computer – a smartphone – instead. According to research firm Gartner, overall handset sales are expected to shrink by 4 percent this year compared to last year. As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." But in any event, the volatility after a Fed announcement, while fun to watch, may not be telling as to what to expect in the future.[More...]

CVS Caremark Tumbles On Lost Business

Pharmacy operator CVS Caremark (CVS) shares stumbled down more than 20% on Thursday morning after they reported earnings. The earnings themselves were just about what the street had expected with profit from continuing operations coming in at $.65 per share, besting estimates by one penny. However, the company revealed that their Caremark pharmacy benefits management unit lost $2 billion in business in the period. The lost contracts include such as large deals with New Jersey state Blue Cross plan and Ohio’s managed Medicare.[More...]

ADP Sees 203,000 Jobs Lost

This morning, Automatic Data Processing (ADP), the biggest payroll processing firm, estimated that the economy lost 203,000 private sector jobs in October. That was more than the consensus estimate of 190,000 jobs lost. However, the September job loss numbers were revised to a loss of just 227,000 from the original read of 254,000. Thus the losses are coming from a higher base level, and if the revisions are included, this report was in line with consensus or perhaps a bit better.[More...]

Nov. 7--Verizon's new high-powered smart phone, the Motorola Droid, is a fun little device and a worthy opponent to Apple Inc.'s hit iPhone.
The Droid, which went on sale Friday for $199, is the first smart phone to incorporate the latest version of the Google Android operating system.
But both companies have struggled in recent years to come up with a response to the popular iPhone -- that is, until the Droid.
