Option implied volatility (IV) on the video game software company Electronic Arts (NYSE:ERTS) rose slightly to 49% on Monday on the news that the company was buying a London-based social network game company called Playfish. Gosh, IV fell back to 40%. Implied volatility is widely believed to be informationally superior to historical volatility, because it is the "market's" forecast of future volatility. The monthly employment situation report is the most watched economic release. The attention has never been greater. Everyone is interested in the unemployment rate, especially when it is approaching 10%. It is a natural topic for the media. Partisan politics has a jobs focus. While the Obama Administration may be claiming jobs "created or saved," this is of little interest to most. The bottom line for most voters will be whether the net job change turns positive and the unemployment rate declines. Few care about hypothetical results.[More...]

ADP Sees 203,000 Jobs Lost

This morning, Automatic Data Processing (ADP), the biggest payroll processing firm, estimated that the economy lost 203,000 private sector jobs in October. That was more than the consensus estimate of 190,000 jobs lost. However, the September job loss numbers were revised to a loss of just 227,000 from the original read of 254,000. Thus the losses are coming from a higher base level, and if the revisions are included, this report was in line with consensus or perhaps a bit better.[More...]

It was a day for listening in Washington at a White House jobs summit Thursday, a day before an unemployment report that may make Friday a day for ducking.
Automatic Data Processing Inc. said Wednesday private sector jobs shrank by 169,000 from October to November, marking the month as the eighth straight with declining job losses.
The ADP report generally reflects the government's findings, but the numbers are overshadowed by the more critical Department of Labor report, which is scheduled for release Friday.
