American Equity Investment Life Holding Company (NYSE: AEL), a leading underwriter of fixed rate and index annuities, reported today that it achieved a long-standing goal of writing in excess of $3 billion in new annuity premium in a single year.
American Equity also reported record 2009 third quarter operating income1 of $28.2 million, or $0.47 per diluted common share, a 26% increase over adjusted2 2008 third quarter operating income of $22.3 million, or $0.40 per diluted common share.

Annuity sales increased 77% to a record $1.1 billion for the second quarter of 2009 compared to second quarter 2008 annuity sales of $648 million.

American Equity Wins Partial Victory in Lawsuit Opposing Rule 151A

American Equity Investment Life Holding Company (NYSE: AEL), a leading underwriter of fixed index annuities (FIAs), was successful in obtaining a remand of Rule 151A adopted by the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this year. Rule 151A, which was to become effective in 2011, expands the SEC’s jurisdiction to include regulatory oversight of FIAs and would require sales agents of FIAs to have securities licenses as well as insurance licenses. American Equity, along with a coalition of industry participants, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit opposing Rule 151A on several grounds, including that FIAs and sales agents are already extensively regulated under state law.[More...]

American Equity Investment Life Holding Company (NYSE:AEL), a leading underwriter of index and fixed rate annuities, announced that it recorded additional “other than temporary impairments” on certain residential mortgage backed securities (“RMBS”) for the fourth quarter of 2008. AEL previously reported the full mark-to-market decline in fair value (net of applicable offsets) of all available-for-sale securities, including these RMBS, in its preliminary balance sheet for December 31, 2008 as published February 25, 2009. The recognition of additional “other than temporary impairments” requires a reassignment of such declines in fair value (net of applicable offsets) from “accumulated other comprehensive loss” as reported in the preliminary balance sheet to “realized losses on investments” reported in the statement of operations for the fourth quarter of 2008.[More...]
