Today's Wall Street Journal had an article that asked the question "Can Rally Run without Revenue?" Is the revenue situation really that bad? Let's take a quick look at some the data compiled through the Alert HQ process. After each quarter's earnings season, I try to pull together what I am now calling the Growth Report. Part 1 compiles the list of stocks that have shown a year-over-year increase in both revenue and earnings AND a sequential quarter-over-quarter increase in both revenue and earnings. It's been a busy week. Corporations slashed jobs on a daily basis. Though I have not seen a total for the week, it's safe to say that the increase in the unemployed is larger than the population of many cities, including Cheyenne. Worse yet, none of these layoffs factored into initial jobless claims, which are already at a 26-year high. The House of Representatives passed the stimulus package on a party-line vote. Though some Republicans will point to subsidies for planting new grass on the Mall as an excuse for voting against the bill, many might be preparing a potential conservative backlash in the 2010 primaries. Such is politics. Euro zone economic sentiment fell to a record low, according to a Reuters' poll. Deflation fears also worsened. [More...]

Watching Dow 8,000

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) was back below 8,000 this morning. This is the third consecutive day that the blue-chip average has traded below 8,000. Previous drops below this level have been followed by large upward moves. Should a rebound fail to occur, the danger that the blue-chip average could drop to new lows significantly increases. Trading ranges hold until they don't, and the risks of downside breakout are rising. There is a rational reason for the current weakness. Fourth-quarter earnings have been lousy, the problems in the banking sector are not getting solved and visibility is lacking. [More...]
