Good morning. With chants of "Dow 10K… Dow 10K" once again rising from the streets at the corner of Broad and Wall yesterday, it is easy to believe that the bulls are back on track and that we'll soon be looking at new highs for the stock market. And when reviewing the data inputs to yesterday's 204 point romp, it is also easy to don the Dow10K hat once again and join in on the celebration.[More...]

Fannie Mae Reports Massive Q3 Loss, Asks For Another $15 Billion From Government As It Is Set To Become Largest US Renter

The latest particular does of lunacy and economic calamity coming out of the intellectual midgets at Fannie and the FHA should be sufficient to push the market well into 1,100 territory tomorrow. FNM's loss for Q3 is $18.9 billion, up from $14.8 billion in Q2, a time when the market was up a good 15%: ever wonder who keeps on subsidizing those gain? That's right - you. Credit-related expenses increased to $22 billion in Q3 from $18.8 billion in Q2. Oh, and Fannie now wants another $15 billion rescue from the Treasury (which is having some troubles with getting that pesky debt ceiling raised to one googol) so it can continue with its plan of keeping shadow inventory away from the market, rent foreclosed houses to their owners at staggeringly low rates, and continue the pretence that bank's balance sheets are well capitalized. Seriously, is the twilight zone any more palatable if one just drinks the Kool Aid or takes some crazy pill?[More...]

As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." But in any event, the volatility after a Fed announcement, while fun to watch, may not be telling as to what to expect in the future.[More...]

Central Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ: CEBK) (the "Company") today reported that its net income for the quarter ended September 30, 2009 increased to $604 thousand, or $0.30 per diluted share, as compared to a net loss of $9.5 million, or $6.80 per diluted share, for the comparable prior year quarter.

The financial results for both 2008 periods were significantly impacted by the September 2008 conservatorship of the Federal National Mortgage Association ("Fannie Mae") and Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation ("Freddie Mac") that resulted in a $9.4 million impairment of the value of the Company's investment in the preferred stock of those companies.

No tax benefit was recorded during that period as the losses were initially considered capital losses and there were insufficient capital gains to offset such losses.
