This list below was on ZDnet and is a cut and paste job from this Brief Paper "How Complex Systems Fail" by Richard I. Cook. I suggest reading Normal Accidents if this field of extreme risk interests you. My only argument is how often behaviour and culture and positive re-inforcement in the form of money etc. aren't mentioned as leading to accidents.[More...]

Good morning. With chants of "Dow 10K… Dow 10K" once again rising from the streets at the corner of Broad and Wall yesterday, it is easy to believe that the bulls are back on track and that we'll soon be looking at new highs for the stock market. And when reviewing the data inputs to yesterday's 204 point romp, it is also easy to don the Dow10K hat once again and join in on the celebration.[More...]

As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." But in any event, the volatility after a Fed announcement, while fun to watch, may not be telling as to what to expect in the future.[More...]

Goldman Sachs Next Slaughter Of The Stock Market Lambs

I’m always interested in how Government ties in with the markets. It’s been a bit of a hobby of mine, along with WWII battles, over the past 2-3 years and there’s no bigger tie then Goldman and the Government then recently…and BOY is it bigger then we know! In my recent late night surfing I came across Greg Roy. Greg recently released a special report with the same title of this blog post, Goldman Sachs’ Next Slaughter of the Stock Market Lambs, and being the digger I am, I read the full report and cold called him. I asked if I could repost a part of the report for my Trader’s Blog members. After some convincing he said ok.[More...]

Indices Barely Salvage Gains In Volatile FOMC Announcement Session

The indices ended a bit positive on FOMC announcement day, but there were some wild gyrations in between.
They gapped up at the opening, backed off, and then ran hard in the morning, reaching over 1700 on the Nasdaq 100 and just above 1060 on the S&P 500. Those were key resistance levels. At that point they drifted lower in a corrective looking pattern until the FOMC announcement, but shortly afterward had some wild gyrations, including a sharp drop and then a sharp rally back. At that point it looked like the rally might take out the early morning highs, but they stalled right at them and rolled over hard into the close, giving back most of the gains, but still managed to close a bit positive on the day.[More...]

How Goldman Secretly Bet on the Housing Crash

Nov. 1--WASHINGTON -- In 2006 and 2007, Goldman Sachs Group peddled more than $40 billion in securities backed by at least 200,000 risky home mortgages, but never told the buyers it was secretly betting that a sharp drop in U.S. housing prices would send the value of those securities plummeting.

Only later did investors discover that what Goldman had promoted as triple-A rated investments were closer to junk.

Now, pension funds, insurance companies, labor unions and foreign financial institutions that bought those dicey mortgage securities are facing large losses, and a five-month McClatchy investigation has found that Goldman's failure to disclose that it made secret, exotic bets on an imminent housing crash may have violated securities laws.
