Biostar Raises $3.6 Million

Biostar Pharmaceuticals has completed a private placement that raised $3.6 million in new capital. Biostar will use the proceeds to complete its new raw materials processing facility. By taking its raw material production in house, Biostar will lower costs and ensure its product quality. Biostar plans to sell excess raw materials to other pharmaceutical companies in the Shaanxi province.[More...]

Via Yves Smith, John Hempton analyzes the quarterly results of Bank of America (so-so) and Fannie Mae (terrible). The underlying issue is that bank quarter-to-quarter results are largely driven by the amount of provisions they take against future loan losses. You can think of this as a very rough approximation to marking-to-market — instead of waiting for the loans to default, you estimate how many loans will default in the future (that estimate should change as the economic situation changes) and put that amount of money into reserves. Then when the defaults actually happen, you take the money out of reserves.[More...]

Nov. 8--This holiday season, consumers plan to spend less -- so retailers are trying an array of tactics to get a larger share of their online dollars.
Online sales have become an important part of overall revenue for retail businesses, and the shopping season during the last two months of the year can make or break the bottom line.
To lure shoppers to their sites, companies are using the tried-and-true tactics of free shipping and online specials, but they also are testing the appeal of online layaway programs and gift guides.
