Chart Of The Week: Breaking Down The S&P 500 In Q2

In the 31 weeks since the launch of the chart of the week feature, I have created all the charts with the exception of (I believe) two of them. Going forward, I think it is time to relax this constraint a little and expand the scope of the chart of the week feature to cover a broader range of subjects, bring in a little more visual variety, etc. What better way to usher in an expanded chart of the week feature, but with a heat map of the second quarter performance of the S&P 500, particularly when the 15% gain in the quarter was the best for the index in eleven years. Oppenheimer (NYSE:OPY): Stock Sales Buoy Investment Banks

According to Oppenheimer (OPY) bank analyst Chris Kotowski, who took over when famed analyst Meredith Whitney started her own firm, companies selling stock to raise capital will be a boon to investment banks in the second quarter. Kotowski’s estimates that U.S. firms sold about $122.6 billion worth of stock in the quarter, about 9 times greater than the previous quarter and twice the quarterly average since 2005. Obviously, this is great news for investment banks as the fees associated with these secondary offerings will boost investment banking revenue beyond where it was in the first quarter. It’s being broadly circulated around the analysis circles, but there appears to be a distinct Head and Shoulders forming on the daily chart of the S&P 500. I’m picking up volume and momentum divergences as well, hinting that lower prices are yet to come but let’s take a look at these structures and what they might mean for traders. Sirius XM Radio can celebrate a successful launch of their newest satellite (FM-5), but as yet, there are still several steps that need to happen before full control is turned over to the company. With the riskiest part of the launch behind them, the company, as well as investors can breathe a bit easier knowing that they now have one of the most powerful satellites ever built safely in orbit. 2009: Markets Move More Overnight than Ever Before

I am going to post some data from TraderFeed blogspot, run by the very well respected Brett Steenbarger. Readers will know we've been noting some very strange action - after the initial surge in March - we began noticing a lot of the upticks were driven by "the persistent buyer" in premarket. Many days futures were negative overnight (I'd check at midnight) then when I woke in the morning I'd notice they'd be flattish or slightly green. Then they'd run up from 7 AM to 9 AM. And not just on days with economic news. This was happening notoriously throughout April and May... over and over. Who is so insistent on wanting to buy the market via futures... based on no news... and willing to place such sloppy orders that they move the market, rather than placing orders slowly so as to get better prices? VV2 Milestones Become Roadblocks: Potential Buyers: We Want Inland Energy Out

Some of the very "milestones" toward the development of the Victorville 2 power plant that the city and its consultant, Inland Energy, boasted about over the past year have become roadblocks to interested buyers, according to those involved.
Now buyers say the city could face hefty termination fees in order to make the project viable, plus a challenge to find its way out of a contract that guarantees Inland Energy $5 million annually in perpetuity.
