Airspan Networks, Inc. Chosen to Establish WiMAX Network in Okinawa, Japan

Airspan Networks announced today that Okinawa Telemessage Co. Ltd., a leading broadband access service provider in Okinawa, Japan, launched a WiMAX Network using their solutions to capitalize on the fast-growing demand for high-quality broadband services. According to the press release, Airspan’s solution was chosen for its flexibility, frequency band availability and the inherent cost-savings offered by wireless-based broadband infrastructure. Okinawa Telemessage plans on providing more than a half a million households in Okinawa Prefecture with high-speed broadband access. The WiMAX network deployment is well underway and once completed will consist of over two hundred Airspan base stations placed throughout Okinawa Island. Nanjo City provided Okinawa Telemessage with roof-top property for placement of base stations, as well as city-owned fiber optic backhauling. Following yesterday's sell-off on renewed credit concerns, futures indicate a flat start for the mkt, but have swung from positive, to negative, and back to even over the course of the morning. After beginning higher, futures sold off with Europe on a number of headlines out overseas. The LIBOR climbed for an 11th straight session to fresh seven-year highs, which continues to underscore the contagion effect of the subprime fallout. However, the overnight deposit rate for euros fell as low as 4.05% after the ECB added an extra 42.25 bln euros ($57.7 bln) to money mkts for one day. German manufacturing orders in July fell 7.1% m/m, the biggest drop since 1991, amid a decline in demand for ships, trains and airplanes. Also, the ECB left their interest rate unchanged at 4.0%, as expected, while the BoE also held their interest rate steady at 5.75%, as expected, and issued a statement saying it was "monitoring closely" the disruption in the financial mkts. As noted in my post yesterday, the market was extended and some consolidation was anticipated. Weaker than expected data related to housing (Pending Home Sales drop 12.2%, biggest drop since stat began), jobs (ADP employment slowest in 4 yrs) and the usual loan loss estimates set the stage for some consolidation and sector profit taking. Futures indicate a sharply lower open for the mkt on renewed concerns about liquidity/credit risks. BNP Paribas has suspended withdrawals from three of its funds valued at around $2.1 bln due to an inability to fairly value their holdings on account of the turmoil in the U.S. credit mkt. Even though BNP's exposure (which is less than 1.0% of total assets) seems relatively small, the announcement serves as a clear reminder that the headline risk remains real and that the volatility in trading conditions will persist. This morning was also the release of July Retail Sales figures, which are coming in weaker than expected amid sluggish sales at teen-apparel shops. WMT, however, reported sales of 1.6% which met expectations.
