It took me a very long time to warm up to Allegiant Travel (ALGT) (43.71, $874mm market cap), the Las Vegas-based operator of an airline and provider of other travel services. After all, I practically preach that the consumer of tomorrow won't be spending anything like the consumer of the past. Leisure travel is one of those areas that will likely struggle in the scenario I envision. Nevertheless, I see ALGT as poised to do very well whether the consumer retrenches or returns. Another reason I was slow to embrace the story is that it operates an airline. While I have had a long-term respect and appreciation for Southwest Airlines (LUV), I view the airline industry as perhaps even worse than the auto industry. Allegiant Travel (ALGT) made good on the shelf filing we pointed out a few weeks ago (Apr 24: Bookkeeping - Adding to Allegiant Travel) ; it has now gone down twice on the same news item; typical market "logic". Via AP Allegiant Travel Co. is planning to sell 2.3 million common shares in a secondary offering. About 2.25 million shares will be offered by Allegiant's second-largest shareholder, PAR Investment Partners, and the rest by Timothy Flynn, who sits on the company's board. Allegiant Travel (ALGT) Continues To Impress

I continue to be in awe of how well Allegiant Travel (ALGT) is doing - having monopoly status on almost all their routes sure helps! $140 oil does not knock them out, a contracting Las Vegas visitation situation does not knock them out, a bad economy for consumer discretionary does not knock them out. As we wrote in our weekly summary they already preannounced last week that they would beat the number so no surprise but the individual metrics continue to impress even as we look beyond the top line figures of revenue and earnings. I was hoping for some sort of sell the news reaction today - nothing. Even here after this huge run, it is still cheap barring a massive jump in crude oil. $4.50 seems doable at this time for 2009 - if the green shoot theorists are correct and people start criss crossing the country[More...]

Flood Of Earnings Begin - Monday/Tuesday Preview

Long time readers will know our love/hate relationship with earnings season. As information hogs we love more data; but as stock market participants we hate the massive overreactions to companies based on 90 days of business and a penny here or there in earnings per share, or +/- 1-2% of revenue on the top line. But this is the only game in town and if certain companies should win or lose 20-30% of their market value within seconds of the all important press release is not up to us; this is the market "we've" created. So we'll gap up or down in many individual stocks, and the market as a whole based on 1-2 "important" companies that - based on a few pennies here or there - shift the entire complexion of a $14 Trillion economy. Or so the pundits will opine. In most cases, I will be cutting back positions going into earnings since they have become 50/50 propositions with completely unknown risks v returns as lemmings rush in (or out). [More...]

Allegiant Travel (ALGT) in Wall Street Journal

It is very rare to see any of our smaller issues with a lengthy story in the Wall Street Journal, so I was taken aback to see a story on Allegiant Travel (ALGT) of all things. It's a nice write up but unfortunately the chart is at the edge of major peril. We've seen the stock turned back by the 20 day moving average of all things for the past month. Frankly, we're close to jumping off this perch if things don't improve quickly in this one. Just another case where fundamentals have detached from the chart... or even cheap leisure travel is going to suffer tremendously in the quarters ahead. Somehow it is hard to believe a company who made money at $140 oil is quite so awful, but the bulls are no longer in control here.

"We achieved our second quarter results despite an almost 13% reduction in our average scheduled airfare from the first quarter of this year, a decline attributable to a softer economy, the introduction of new routes, and a 15% increase in year-over-year capacity on a 'same-store sales' basis in existing markets.
