Durect Corp. (DRRX) utilizes 6 proprietary drug delivery technologies to develop pharmaceutical systems that enhance treatment capabilities in the areas of chronic pain, cardiovascular diseases and central nervous system disorders. Best Performing Stock of 2008

I used to, and will one day return, to posting the best performing stocks of the week - but the wicked volatility and "student body left" trading of the past 4 months has made it a moot point. Everything must either be bought or sold, as stocks are either deemed "good" or "bad" that hour, day, or month. The herd piles in, or piles out - regardless of sector, style, fundamentals. It's been a market of asset allocation not individual stocks much of the back half of the year. I like to look for relative strength and ride sector/company trends for the longer term - this market is not for that sort of investor. This has been for many months a run and gun daytrader environment; not a place for theme investors. Back in early October I wrote in (Oct 1: Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide) how there simply was no asset class (ex US Treasuries and US Dollar), no sector, no country to hide in. Everything stunk, and in fact it got worse in the ensuing weeks. September, October, November 2008 might be the worst 3 months ever (I don't have the date) but if not, it has to be in the top 3. AMAG Pharma (AMAG) more than doubled on word that the FDA accepted its complete response for a NDA of iron-deficiency anemia drug ferumoxytol in patients with chronic kidney disease and will issue a final ruling before year-end. The news is a major relief for AMAG as no new clinical trials were required and the quick decision deadline before year-end is encouraging for the approval prospects of ferumoxytol. A trio of companies expect FDA decisions for abuse-resistant pain drugs before year-end, including Pain Therapeutics (PTIE) + King Pharma (KG) for Remoxy and Alpharma (ALO) for Embeda. Now that Alpharma has accepted King's buyout bid, the latter reflects a way to trade both decisions in a single stock for twice the chances of approval. Abbott Labs (ABT) is a consistent performer with diversified healthcare operations, including pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical nutrition products, and medical devices/stents. ABT is back to the lower end of its trading range near 50 bucks, presenting an excellent entry point with a 2.8% dividend yield and forward PE of about 14X. Celgene (CELG) is also trading at the low end of its trading range around 50 bucks as a large-cap growth stock focused on cancer biotech products and research with an estimated PEG ratio below one. King Pharmaceuticals Posts $11M Loss

May 12--King Pharmaceuticals officials are blaming an $11 million loss in the first quarter on increased competition for some of the company's most popular drugs and a one-time cost associated with its recent merger with Alpharma.
The company reported an $85.5 million gain during last year's first quarter, the reports state.
King CEO Brian Markison said the difference between the quarters is mostly due to a drop in revenue from the company's branded pharmaceuticals, like its blood pressure medication Altace, which had its first generic substitute in December 2007.
