Biostar Raises $3.6 Million

Biostar Pharmaceuticals has completed a private placement that raised $3.6 million in new capital. Biostar will use the proceeds to complete its new raw materials processing facility. By taking its raw material production in house, Biostar will lower costs and ensure its product quality. Biostar plans to sell excess raw materials to other pharmaceutical companies in the Shaanxi province.[More...]

As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." But in any event, the volatility after a Fed announcement, while fun to watch, may not be telling as to what to expect in the future.[More...]

Indices Barely Salvage Gains In Volatile FOMC Announcement Session

The indices ended a bit positive on FOMC announcement day, but there were some wild gyrations in between. They gapped up at the opening, backed off, and then ran hard in the morning, reaching over 1700 on the Nasdaq 100 and just above 1060 on the S&P 500. Those were key resistance levels. At that point they drifted lower in a corrective looking pattern until the FOMC announcement, but shortly afterward had some wild gyrations, including a sharp drop and then a sharp rally back. At that point it looked like the rally might take out the early morning highs, but they stalled right at them and rolled over hard into the close, giving back most of the gains, but still managed to close a bit positive on the day.[More...]

Targacept has profit in quarter: Large milestone payment by AstraZeneca credited for first profit in almost three years

Nov. 6--Targacept Inc. posted its first quarterly profit in nearly three years yesterday, bolstered in large part by a $10 million milestone payment by AstraZeneca PLC.
Targacept, based in Piedmont Triad Research Park in Winston-Salem, is developing drugs based on nicotine research to treat diseases of the central nervous system.
The payment was the result of Targacept's research in adult attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder involving its AZD3480 drug compound, also known as TC-1734.
