Verizon Tests 4G Network

Verizon (VZ) reportedly completed field tests for its fourth-generation (4G) network based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless broadband technology in Boston and Seattle. These cities are expected to be the first two markets where 4G services will be commercially available in 2010. This represents a major milestone in the company’s first phase 4G trial process, providing the roadmap for future test launches. Verizon has used its 700 megahertz (MHz) wireless frequency band for 4G data transfer to successfully test applications such as web browsing, voice transmission, video streaming and file upload and download. It really has been a struggle to find new opportunities that have real growth potential to them; it seems much of the lauded U.S. "industry creation" must be happening in the private side as finding solid public companies, that can sustain growth at 25%+ has been difficult for a long while. I've been interested in the tech space here for a few weeks, but most of the names blasting off are names coming out of cyclical troughs - as I've said most of the technology space is an over hyped "industrial" theme, but covered in silicon to make it sexy. Nokia Siemens Networks to lay off up to 5,700

HELSINKI - Nokia Siemens Networks said Tuesday it will lay off up to 5,700 workers globally as part of a move to cut annual costs by euro500 million ($740 million).
The mobile network equipment maker - a joint venture between Finland's Nokia Corp. and Siemens AG of Germany - said it will reduce its five business units to three by January, and strengthen its business through partnerships and acquisitions.
"As our customers make purchasing decisions, they want a partner who engages in issues well beyond a traditional discussion of technology," said Rajeev Suri, the new chief executive officer of Nokia Siemens Networks.
