Dell, Inc. (DELL) posted better-than-expected revenue for the second quarter of fiscal 2009 as aggressive pricing that helped drive unit sales. On a positive note, it does appear that price cuts were successful in taking some share, and operating expense reductions are ahead of expectations. On August 28, Dell released results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2009, ended August 1, 2008. Revenue for the quarter was $16,434 million in the quarter, ahead of our $15,958 million estimate and 11.2% above the $14,776 million reported in the second quarter of fiscal 2008. AMERCO Inc. (UHAL) is the parent company of U-HAUL International, the largest consumer truck rental company in the world. It is also the second-largest self-storage company in North America. The problems of the auto industry have impacted AMERCO's revenue and earnings. Self-Moving revenue was slightly below our estimate ($390A vs. $400E) as was pretax income ($48 vs. $50). We expect some of the problems to continue and have adjusted our numbers. We rate the stock a Buy and reduced our price target to $60 a share. As suggested in our 4Q08 report, discounting was less in the June quarter. This reduction may also have been due to the Budget rental trucks cutting back on discounting due to its impact on revenue. Apr. 5--AMIDST POPULIST anger directed at Wall Street excesses, the federal effort to shore up the nation's financial system will find its way to Main Street this month.
Proposals related to federal rescue plan funds are to be voted upon by shareholders at two local banks.
The other, First Defiance Financial Corp., of Defiance, received $37 million in January through the federal program, and so by law shareholders will be asked to vote on a plan to compensate the bank's executives.
