Biostar Raises $3.6 Million

Biostar Pharmaceuticals has completed a private placement that raised $3.6 million in new capital. Biostar will use the proceeds to complete its new raw materials processing facility. By taking its raw material production in house, Biostar will lower costs and ensure its product quality. Biostar plans to sell excess raw materials to other pharmaceutical companies in the Shaanxi province.[More...]

Even during the worldwide recession it seems consumers continue to abandon ‘dumb’ phones when, for just a little bit more money, they can get a pocket-sized computer – a smartphone – instead. According to research firm Gartner, overall handset sales are expected to shrink by 4 percent this year compared to last year. Meanwhile, smartphone sales are forecast to grow by more than 20 percent.[More...]

As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." But in any event, the volatility after a Fed announcement, while fun to watch, may not be telling as to what to expect in the future.[More...]

$140 billion networking goliath Cisco Systems (CSCO) reported 1st quarter fiscal year earnings after the close yesterday. Revenues were off 13% from the year ago period - though they were up 6% from the previous quarter. Net income was off 15% from the year ago period - though it was up 15% from the previous quarter. All in all the numbers do suggest stabilization, albeit at a low level.[More...]

Nov. 7--When Kevin Johnson was hired as CEO of Juniper Networks last year, analysts said the veteran Microsoft executive could help the Sunnyvale networking equipment company find new growth and ramp up competition with the much-larger market leader, Cisco Systems.
Last week, Johnson and other Juniper executives flew east for what the company billed as a major event, inaugurating their listing on the New York Stock Exchange and announcing new hardware and software for an audience of tech analysts and reporters.
Johnson, who ran sales and marketing at Microsoft before he was promoted to oversee Windows software and online services, described the Juniper announcements as a "stake in the ground for our vision for the next decade."
